A message from Cold for Karen
On Saturday, February 7, 2026, hundreds of us from Monmouth County and beyond will run into the icy ocean—not for the thrill, but in solidarity with our local pALS (people with ALS), who face challenges far greater than cold water every single day.
Team “Cold for Karen” is plunging in loving memory of Karen Sauer, who passed from ALS in 2020. Karen was so much more than her diagnosis. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, aunt, sister, godmother, and a loyal friend. She loved the beach, so jumping into the ocean feels like a fitting and meaningful way to honor her spirit.
When Karen was diagnosed with ALS, local pALS was there to support her and her family. This plunge is our way of giving back—ensuring that other families facing ALS receive the same compassion, resources, and care.
You don’t have to jump to be part of this day. Friends, family, and supporters are encouraged to come cheer us on and celebrate Karen with us. We’ll be gathering at Reef & Barrel in Manasquan before the plunge for anyone who needs a little “liquid courage,” and we’ll head back afterward to warm up, listen to music, share stories, and spend the day remembering Karen—ideally with a glass of Pinot Grigio, one of her favorites, in hand.
If jumping into freezing water isn’t for you, the plunge we’re asking you to make a donation which is just as impactful. By clicking the Donate button above, you can make a secure online donation in Karen’s name and help make a meaningful difference in the lives of people living with ALS.
Thank you for helping us honor Karen’s life, her love of the beach, and the community she meant so much to.
Thanks for joining the family!
