Ruby Bridges is someone I want to think about more often. She challenges me to be better.

Ruby Bridges

Fought racism at 6 years old

When Ruby Bridges was only six years old, she became the first black child to attend an all-white primary school in Louisiana, desegregating the William Frantz Elementary School on November 14, 1960. Escorted by federal marshals past crowds screaming vicious slurs at her, Ruby was a class of one.

Segregationist backlash: Abon lost his job, and grocery stores refused to sell to Lucille. Ruby’s share-cropping grandparents were evicted from their farm.

“Some people did not want a black child to go to the white school. They stood near the school. They yelled at me to go away.”
