“God gives us the capacity for choice. We can alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes—and we must.” --from Jimmy Carter's Nobel Lecture
Jimmy Carter
is a diplomat, humanitarian, activist, and author. Accomplishments include peanut farmer, Governor of Georgia, 39th President of the United States, longest living former President, and founder of the Carter Center.
The Carter Center, a non-profit, promotes peace and fights neglected diseases globally. Carter has led peacekeeping efforts around the world, on his own and by invitation.
I selected Jimmy Carter as my peace hero because his lifetime of service to his (our) country is so exemplary, so unusual, and so inspiring that I felt he simply had to have a place in our peace hero parade. Sometimes regarded as a “failed” president, his post-presidency has been so remarkable, long, and wide ranging that he is now regarded as one of our most effective leaders.
Most Americans know of Habitat for Humanity, have seen Jimmy Carter with other former presidents at important national events, and are aware that he continued to teach a Sunday School class in his home church whenever he was at home, not traveling on another mission of some kind.
Jimmy Carter is in his late nineties, doing what he can for as long as he can.
