Having a couple hundred swimmers crossing the Hudson raises important awareness of the need to keep the Hudson River clean! Riverpool is dedicated to nurturing a love of the Hudson River by creating safe access for swimmers in its mighty waters that flow both ways. Funds raised here go to the River Pool at Beacon to pay the lifeguards and do the agitating that it is taking— and it seems to be taking a lot—to build a bigger in-Hudson-River pool.
This year, I want to dedicate the swim to the memory of my sister, Carol E. Brandwein who loved immersing herself in any bodies of water, particularly oceans, but I’m sure she’d have been happy to jump in the Hudson, too. At 65, I have outlived her by a year. Looking at the many grey-haired folks lined up on the dock at Newburgh, my husband calls our swim “the senior swim.” I’m proud, however, to be a senior who is in good enough shape to swim the mile or so across!
